Cleansing and Charging Crystals

Why is it important to cleanse a crystal?  Crystals will soak in negative or lower vibrational energy.  Crystals can take in so much negative and lower vibrational energy from the individual using them, that it may crack and/or discolour the crystals over time.  In order to keep crystals working to their ultimate potential, you will want to cleanse them regularly.   You may cleanse them every day or every time you use them, or whenever you feel guided to do so.  It’s important to cleanse them after deep healing meditations or energy sessions. You could choose to place them on/or near Selenite after every use to clear the energy they absorbed.  Selenite is a water-soluble crystal so it cannot be cleansed with water, although Selenite has the wonderful ability to cleanse itself as well as any crystal placed on it or near it.  Pair selenite with candlelight nearby and you have double the cleansing power.

There are several ways to cleanse crystals, although not all crystals can be cleansed using all the methods listed.  Please read on for proper cleansing methods.  Popular ways to cleanse crystals include using sea salt water, seawater or rainwater, using candlelight, smudging them with sage, cleansing with a Tibetan Singing Bowl, storing in a bag with Carnelian, burying them in the sand or soil for 24 hours, burying them in brown rice overnight, placing on a cluster or geode of Clear Quartz or Amethyst, sunlight, moonlight, breath or visualization, Reiki techniques, and/or meditating with the clear intension of cleansing the crystal from all negative and lower vibrational energy.  Not all crystals can be cleansed with water for a few reasons and its very important to know which ones they are, as some are toxic when mixed with water and/or oil.  Some crystals are water-soluble and will either flake off or dissolve in water.  While some crystals, because of their molecular content, can become toxic when mixed with water, so it is important to research for the safest ways to handle these magnificent healing tools.

Crystals that are safe to be cleansed in water, may be rinsed with sea salt water, sea water or rainwater.  I have just sprinkled sea salt directly on certain crystals and rinsed them in lukewarm water, while setting the clear intention that all the negative and low vibrational energy is removed.  But my favorite methods of cleansing crystals are, using Selenite and Reiki techniques while setting a clear intention of removing all negative and low vibrational energy.

Sunlight is also a great way to cleanse and charge your crystals simultaneously.  That being said, some crystals shouldn’t be kept in the sun.  The following is a list of crystals that should either stay out of the sun or be limited to only a few minutes in sunlight.

Crystals That Fade from Sunlight Exposure:

Amegreen, Amethyst, Ametrine, Apatite, Apophyllite, Aquamarine, Auralite, Aventurine, Beryl, Calcite, Celestite, Chrysoprase, Citrine, Fluorite, Hiddenite, Kunzite, Opal, Prasiolite, Rose Quartz, Sapphire, Spirit Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Super Seven, Topaz, Turquoise, & Unakite

Crystals That Become Brittle from Sunlight Exposure:

Apophyllite, Beryl, Calcite, Celestite, Chrysoprase, Clear Quartz, Opal

Spirit Quartz will fade in color when placed in sunlight but may ignite from prolonged sun exposure.  Best to keep this beautiful crystal indoors and away from the sun entirely.

Crystals may also be cleansed and charged in full moonlight.  The best charge when using full moonlight, is the night before the actual full moon.  This method can still be used even if it is cloudy.  Some people believe that moonlight may add a chaotic energy to crystals, especially around an eclipse.  Use your own inner guidance when cleansing and charging your crystals, as your intuition and higher self will guide you for what is right for you.

Most crystals that end with “ite” are not suitable for water.  Azurite, Angelite, Calcite, Celestite, Fluorite, Hematite, Labradorite, Lepidolite, Malachite, and Selenite will break down in water, either loosing their luster, colour, and/or become soft or brittle or dissolve completely.

Some stones will rust when left in water for prolonged periods, as they have a high iron content.  These include Goethite, Hematite, Magnetite, and Pyrite.

There are several crystals that should never be placed in water or oils as they will break down their chemical components and can become toxic.
